ANDREW SMITH, EXECUTIVE VICE CHAIR FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA'S SAE INTERNATIONAL CHAPTER FACES LIMITED RESOURCES AND THE GROWTH OF WHAT WAS ONCE A SMALL TEAM.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA CHAPTER of SAE International (UMSAE) is not quite like any other SAE collegiate branch. Located in the Canadian city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the University of Manitoba is home to one of the largest SAE International Collegiate Chapters in the world. Fluctuating between 130 and 150 members, the organization proudly boasts the title of second-largest SAE Collegiate Chapter in the world and continues to strive for that first-place title.

With so many students interested in SAE International and gaining pre-graduation experience, the Collegiate Chapter supports four Collegiate Design Series (CDS) teams and is even considering adding another. Regular Class Aero Design, Baja SAE, Formula SAE, and Formula SAE Electric teams design, build, and compete annually from the U of M with the Formula team attending the Michigan and Lincoln FSAE events. Ironically, UMSAE does not participate in the Clean Snowmobile Challenge even though Winnipeg has snow for roughly six months of the year.
