The commercialization of autonomous vehicles requires proficiency across many domains: engineering, product development, logistics, public policy, and more. But no matter the area of expertise, one theme is constant: safety must come first. But how do you measure AV safety in a tangible and transparent way? Just ask Aurora. As the company approaches their first commercial AV trial run from Dallas to Houston, they are laser focused on achieving their Aurora Driver Ready milestone by validating software, hardening hardware, and closing the Aurora Driver Safety Case, an industry first. At the recent Government/Industry Meeting in Washington, DC, we sat down in-person with Nat Beuse, Chief Safety Officer and member of the US Department of Transportation's Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee, to discuss Aurora's approach to AV safety and why scaling AVs will be a tremendous benefit to society.
