Thermally conductive adhesives and sealants play a pivotal role in the assembly and performance of battery systems for electric mobility applications. Proper selection of such ?heat transfer materials? (HTMs), from the cell to the pack level, is vital for achieving high throughput manufacturing and for effectively and safely managing thermal, mechanical, and environmental loads in the end product. Moreover, serviceability and global regulatory requirements must be considered during the selection process. In order to facilitate this process and the greater advancement of battery-propelled vehicles, a concise body of knowledge pertaining to this subject has been recently assembled and captured in SAE Information Report J-3178. This talk will highlight some of the key concepts, properties, and dispensing of HTMs as well as the roles they serve in present-day applications within battery systems. Time will be devoted to discussing future reports related to thermal management.
