Automakers and powertrain R&D specialists are developing combustion engines specifically for series-hybrid, EREV, and PHEV applications. Top engineers explain the opportunities involved.

The industry's growing interest in series hybrids and various types of plug-in and extended- range electric vehicles (PHEVs and EREVs) is giving engine designers a rare opportunity-the clean-sheet optimization of the internal-combustion engine (ICE).

While the pioneering 2011 Chevrolet Volt and Fisker Karma will launch with off-the- shelf ICEs to minimize cost and speed development, their next-generation successors are expected to feature dedicated, more efficient, and even unconventional power units.
