Electrically Non-Conductive Ladder Fall Protection

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center developed an electrically non-conductive ladder fall protection system for the Launch Complex (LC) 39B lightning towers. The towers include a 100-foot fiberglass mast at the top of the tower structure. The fiberglass masts insulate the metallic tower structure from the lightning strike protection system that is housed at the top of the fiberglass masts.

Founded on July 1, 1960, Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL is one of NASA’s largest field centers. Marshall engineers designed, built, tested, and helped launch the Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo astronauts to the Moon. Marshall developed new rocket engines and tanks for the fleet of space shuttles, built sections of the International Space Station (ISS), and now manages all the science work of the astronauts aboard the ISS from a 24/7 Payload Operations Integration Center. Marshall also manages NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans — the agency’s premier site for the manufacture and assembly of large-scale space structures and systems.

This Interface Control Plan establishes a program for interface control among the major segments/equipments of a DoD program. This could be an airborne weapon system, Medium Launch Vehicle System, Space Launch Complex System, etc. The program is based on formal agreements between participating organizations, and includes (1) documentation to establish, define and control interface requirements and to detail interface design definition between system segments, (2) interface management under the purview of the Interface Management Boards (IMB) and (3) interface control, through Interface Control Working Groups (ICWGs). The plan establishes the IMB and ICWG policy and procedures. Furthermore, it sets forth the Government Agencies Program Offices, associate contractors and participating Government Agency responsibilities in support of the Interface Control Program and the conduct of interface management/control through the IMBs, and ICWGs.

Software for Environmental Monitoring in a Large Facility

Four computer programs enable the nearly real-time distribution, analysis, and display of data on temperature, relative humidity, and particle fallout measured by sensors in the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) and the Launch Pad Payload Changeout Room (PCR) at Kennedy Space Center. The previous environmental-monitoring software distributed data only once per hour; did not provide for rapid, automated analysis; and was not flexible enough to accommodate new sensors. Under the present software, readings are taken from the sensors every 2 minutes and transmitted over local-area networks to a server computer. Any computer on the network can display the data as both numerical values and colors (green, yellow, or red for within, almost out of, or out of specification, respectively). Out-of-specification data is also signaled by audible beeps. Optionally, daily graphs of data can be displayed. The programs, written with LabVIEW software, are modular and can be modified easily to accommodate new sensors, change the sampling interval, enable or disable audible alarms, or rescale graphs.

Mobile System for Control of a Remote Rocket-Launching Range

The Wallops Flight Facility of the Goddard Space Flight Center has designed and built in-house a Mobile Range Control System (MRCS), which is a self-contained system to be deployed in support of rocket launches at remote ranges in cases in which termination of flight may be required for safety purposes. The MRCS includes data-acquisition subsystems, real-time data-computation subsystems, range-safety displays, command/destruct transmitters, and supporting communication subsystems, all together providing for remote range control.

The US Space Program can expand to recapture its position of world leadership by the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of America in October 1992, when there is: A. Consensus on goals, leading to long term planning of a systematically expanding permanent infra-structure. B. Focus on human factors for long duration, and broad participation to provide the needed popular, political and financial support and yield increased benefits. C. Cost-efficiency through better and more intensive utilization of available and near future technology.Re-evaluating basic requirements will lead to again utilizing well-proven concepts such as unmanned HLLV and upper stages in Space station design (commercially retro-fitting redesigned or pre-modified ET's). This will make possible the large pressurized volumes and earth-normal conditions (including artificial gravity) necessary for long duration human habitation, and free the Space station from the planning and size restrictions of the Shuttle cargo bay. The proposed large SpacePort and rotating Space Complex in LEO - springboard to Geosync, Moon and Mars - will be the first tangible results.
