This SAE Recommended Practice describes a test method for determination of steady-state heavy truck (Class VI, VII, and VIII) tire force and moment properties under free-rolling conditions. The properties are acquired as functions of incrementally changed slip angle and normal force using a sequence specified in this document. The data are suitable for use in vehicle dynamics modeling, comparative evaluations for research and development purposes, and manufacturing quality control. Truck Tires-For the purposes of this document, truck tires are defined as being the tires mounted on all heavy commercial over-the-road trucks and buses. Examples of vehicles which use heavy truck tires include: tractor/semi-trailer combinations, dump trucks, school buses, etc. Tires mounted on other types of lighter GVWR vehicles are explicitly excluded from consideration in this document. Effects Not Considered-The effects of inclination angle and spindle torque or any combination of inclination and spindle torque with slip angle and normal force are not considered in this document. This SAE Recommended Practice provides general guidelines for measuring the splash and spray produced by vehicles operating over wet pavements. The guidelines describe both the video images and contrast measurements between black and white checkerboards when a spray cloud is superimposed on them as a means of measuring the obscuring spray. The laster method uses laser transmittance through the spray cloud as the means of measurement. It is left to the users of this practice to decide which method is best suited to their needs. There is no implied relationship between these two method, although it is expected that the ranking of relative spray reduction between test vehicle configurations would be approximately the same. All sections listed in this document are to be considered as common to both methods, unless otherwise noted. There are complex interactions of variables that affect splash and spray, and by its nature, it is very chaotic, turbulent phenomenon. The procedure applies to heavy vehicles weighing more than 11 800 kg (26 000 lb) and particularly to those vehicles having two or more articulation joints that allow rotation in a horizontal plane. The procedure pertains to the lateral directional response of multi-articulated vehicles in avoidance maneuvers performed at highway speeds without braking. This test procedure is intended to be used for determining the rearward amplification and dynamic offtracking qualities of multi-trailer commercial vehicles (heavy trucks and buses).
