Battery Storage Applications

Battery Energy Storage: Grid-Scale:

In this course, you will start by learning about grid integration services. Then, you will be introduced to the Gotland Case study. Gotland is Sweden’s largest island, and it currently generates a large amount of wind power and an increasing amount of solar power. But they want more, and have established ambitious goals for long term sustainability and decarbonization. You will learn how batteries can be used in energy storage systems to enable Gotland to reach its sustainability goals and carbon neutrality. Finally, you will learn about the innovation project SENSIBLE, which explores how to best use energy storage with distribution systems. You will explore the challenges involved in the installation of the Évora demonstrator and explore its future uses at different grid-scale levels.

Battery Energy Storage: Behind the meter:

In this course, you will learn about the different customer service scenarios for behind-the-meter applications of residential energy storage. Then, you will get a practical perspective on this type of storage by exploring a case study involving the installation of behind-the-meter batteries in apartment buildings and villas in Uppsala, Sweden. We will also look at the impacts of behind-the-meter storage for network operators. Finally, we will explore storage applications on a local level.

Battery Energy storage: electrical mobility:

In this course, you will learn about the electrification of the transportation system and how this development affects the overall energy system. Next, you will hear from an engineer from the field who will share crucial insights about the current market of electric vehicles and current and future developments regarding charging infrastructure. You will also learn about some emerging new business models linked to electric vehicles.

Battery Energy Storage: Industrial Applications

In this course, your instructor, representing a company that makes underground mining equipment, will explain how electrification in underground mining can reduce overall costs, reduce CO2 emissions, and much more!

What Will You Learn

  • Summarize the main applications for batteries in energy storage systems
  • Discuss the main role of energy storage systems in different applications/levels (grid, behind the meter, industry)
  • Analyze the challenges of battery storage systems implementation in each application studied
