DFMEA Overview, Application and Facilitation

This course is verified by Probitas as meeting the AS9104/3A requirements for Continuing Professional Development.

This course serves a dual purpose: it delves into fundamental DFMEA principles and their practical applications while also offering guidance on leading DFMEA teams. Participants will be introduced to crucial FMEA concepts, along with the theoretical foundations before exploring how to implement these concepts in their DFMEA endeavors. Often, the FMEA process can become a mere replication of past efforts, which poses risks for both organizations developing the products under scrutiny and the end-users. FMEA is not merely a technical process, but also a creative analysis technique aimed at averting failures. Effective facilitation and leadership skills are needed to achieve optimal results. Beyond basic DFMEA training, this program focuses on basic facilitation and leadership skills, demonstrating how, when, and why to leverage these skills in the FMEA process. Participant engagement includes reading assignments, group discussions, practical exercises, collaborative creation of Block diagrams, and planning and facilitating a simulated FMEA session based on participant’s own products or processes.

What Will You Learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain basic reliability concepts as related to the application of the DFMEA
  • Explain the philosophy behind the FMEA process as related to the prevention of product/service failures
  • Lead FMEA (Note this can apply for both the DFMEA and PFMEA) teams through the process for optimal results by effective planning and facilitation:
    • Leverage the planning and preparation concepts and steps identified in the latest version of SAE J1739
    • Use facilitation skills to get the best inputs from FMEA teams by keeping the teams engaged, generating new creative inputs, and effectively dealing with conflicts as they might arise
  • Follow the Updated SAE J1739 six step process to prepare for and complete a DFMEA
    • Identify the collection of information necessary for the completion of the DFMEA
    • Build and use a Block Diagram to guide the DFMEA analysis
    • Explain the difference between the DFMEA and the PFMEA
    • Analyze DFMEA results and follow up properly with appropriate Design Controls or other corrective actions

Is This Course For You

The DFMEA Overview, Application and Facilitation Program will provide training to a manufacturer’s engineering, development, operations, quality and administrative personnel that will primarily plan and lead the DFMEA effort. These individuals are typically involved in the development and production of products/parts either for direct use in the manufacture of automobiles or any other mobility products.
