The variable valve timing engine system installing reed valves at each intake passages to prevent the intake backflow at valve overlap is newly developed and evaluated. This paper describes the improvement of the fuel consumption and the increase of engine torque at full load in this experiment and confirms that it has much potential as a practical system. This paper also describes our analysis on the effect of the reed valves and the internal EGR.
