Abstract
The ABET Relations Committee of SAE has conducted focus group discussions with mobility industry representatives to solicit input concerning industry's requirements for the engineering graduate of the next century. This task was undertaken in response to “Criteria 2000,” which involves a shift from process-oriented to outcome based assessment of undergraduate engineering programs, published by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The discussion forums were held with executives and managers representing corporations in the automotive and aerospace industries. The tone of these sessions indicated general support for ABET's move to outcome based criteria, with concerns expressed about not breaking an essentially-good system and the metrics that would be employed to measure outcomes. An insightful list of strengths, improvement opportunities, and desired key-attributes for engineers in 2005 was developed from the panel's input. “Criteria 2000” comprehends these desired attributes.
