Development of Heui Fuel System for 2-3l Automotive Diesels

The Hydraulic Actuated, Electronically Controlled Unit Injector (HEUI) fuel system was introduced into production 4th Quarter of 1993 in mid-range truck engines. This marked the end of an intense multi-year development process necessary to bring this break through technology to the marketplace. The production launch was relatively trouble free and customer acceptance has been excellent. As a result, we have now manufactured 2,000,000 HEUIs for our four customer engines. As we add production capacity for growing demand, it's appropriate to identify the next target market for HEUI. High speed DI automotive diesels seem to offer an excellent match for the following reasons: The high speed capacity of the "real time" HEUI common rail system; The low cost of the HEUI system; A major volume opportunity; and OEM's are in the midst of major engine redesign.
Since Caterpillar has little experience in this market segment, we decided to develop a concept demonstration automotive injector and evaluate its performance on a typical 4V high speed engine. We chose AVL for the engine evaluation portion of the study because of their extensive experience with this class engine.
