Extension of the Filling and Emptying Engine Performance Simulation Method to Include Gas Dynamic Effects

Engine simulation programs are routinely used to optimize many turbocharged engine parameters. Programs based upon the filling-and-emptying method are widely used because of their simplicity and ease of application. However, they are unable to simulate gas dynamic effects, which can have a critical influence on both engine and turbocharger performance. This paper describes a simple method for the incorporation of a gas dynamic capability into a filling-and-emptying simulation based upon a lumped linearized form of the one-dimensional momentum equation.
