Abstract
Alcohols, as one of the most likely alternative automotive fuels to petroleum, have been investigated in many countries. A development program for vehicles running on M85 methanol fuel has been conducted in China.
A partially synthetic oil was selected as the basestock for multigrade engine oil 15W/30. The performance of the basestock, additives, and formulated oil was tested with a series of laboratory simulating test rigs. The optimum oil formulation was adopted detailed study on the effects of methanol, formic acid and water on formulated oils.
The oil has passed caterpillar 1G2 and L-38 engine tests. It has also been tested successfully on the M85 methanol-fuelled VW Santana engine and Chinese 492M engine for 300h and 400h respectively. The field tests of EQ-140 and CA-141 trucks on M85 fuel have completed over fifty thousand kilometres. The test results show that the formulated oil possesses excellent antiwear, anticorrosion and demulsifying performance.
