Abstract
Reducing the time to market for new vehicles and manufacturing more innovative, competitive and reliable products is the primary objective of all the car manufacturers. The adoption of integrated CAD/CAE design procedures can help to achieve this target. At the Fiat Research Center in recent years a project has been started to assess the feasibility of these automated and integrated procedures for quite simple engine procedures are: 1) the use of new CAD tools for solid modelling and parametric design, starting from a basic component design; 2) an automated structural analysis and weight optimization; 3) a reliable fatigue life prediction based on a statistical approach; and 4) an automatic data transfer for product machining. The validity of this methodology will be checked experimentally by designing, manufacturing and testing an alternative connecting rod.
