Hino Motors, Ltd. has developed a new city bus with a diesel- electric hybrid engine system consisting of a conventional diesel engine, a very thin three phase AC motor equipped with flywheel housing of engine, a very light weight and small size inverter and batteries, etc. This system is able to convert braking energy to electric energy in a battery and add the torque to the diesel engine by AC motor for supplying its energy. Therefore, the exhaust smoke and NOx produced at start-up and acceleration of this vehicle are greatly improved in comparison with the conventional diesel engine.
