Abstract
An investigation was made on transient ignition and combustion at starting in a swirl chamber diesel engine by high speed photography. It was found that the starting throat serves a dual purpose of direct ignition in main chamber and easier ignition in swirl chamber, and thus helps to shorten the starting process. The advantageous effects of the starting throat were also shown on the performance by examining the two starting processes in diesel engines with and without a starting throat. The flame motion pattern in cylinder was analyzed and the principle for the rational design of the main chamber was discussed.
