Abstract
This paper describes combined transport widely used in Europe. It consists of rail transport of road-trailers, removeable crates or containers. This type of transport has been increasing at the rate of 10% per year while traditional train traffic has been declining at the rate of 8 to 10%. It now represents 14% of traffic and is projected to reach 20%. This type of transport is best suited for distances of around 500Km. It should be noted that rail/road companies are being created in and out of the EEC, including countries of the Eastern bloc. The development of a study for setting up a European scheme for combined transport for the main networks will be voted on by the end of the first semester of 1989.
