Abstract
An outline of the promises and pitfalls of knowledge systems as applied to various phases of a manufactured products business is presented. Some of the aspects of applying knowledge systems to engineering design problems, manufacturing engineering and product service are outlined. The necessity for engineers to understand the limitations of current technology so that it can be effectively matched to appropriate applications is highlighted.
