Abstract
The design of an ignition system for a modern internal combustion engine had to take into account all the functions currently being performed by the present system as well as the requirements of the new system. The need to keep the ignition transparent to the engine computer was paramount because of not wanting to redesign hardware and software requiring long leadtimes. The need to drive the engine oil pump on the first application was still necessary but the desire was to provide “Net build timing” from the crankshaft which negated the need for service and engine position timing adjust. The electronics strategy had to be consistent with the sensing and manufacturing techniques that were selected for the application. The ignition coil and its' development were planned for the size, performance and appearance desired.
