Abstract
Motor-vehicle-related pollution problems are an increasing concern in Korea. Although the overall vehicle population of about 1,000,000 is relatively small, its rapid rate of growth and increasing density require prompt control action. Because mobile source emissions contribute significantly to violations of ambient air quality standards, emissions standards have been established for both in-use and newly manufactured vehicles. Also, emission checks have been incorporated in the country's required safety inspection program, and a random, roadside emissions inspection effort has been initiated. Of particular interest is the fact that about 50 percent of the population is made up of diesel-fueled vehicles. The Environment Administration is also working with transportation officials to ensure the timely implementation of environmentally sound transportation control measures
