Abstract
Most of the spark ignition engine cycle simulations use turbulent burning models which require a knowledge of laminar burning velocity of the fuel-air mixture as a function of mixture strength, unburned mixture temperature and pressure. In this work burning velocity data of different alternative spark ignition engine fuels obtained by various workers have been compared and critically evaluated. Empirical and semi-empirical correlations, suitable for cycle simulation studies, are presented for laminar burning velocity as a function of mixture strength, unburned mixture temperature, pressure, and residual gas fraction. Fuels considered include ethanol, methanol, alcohol/water blends, isooctane/alcohol blends, propane and isooctane. Experimental data obtained by the present author constitute the major part of the data used in correlations. Published data of other workers and the predictions of theoretical thermo-kinetic models have also been considered in correlations.
