Abstract
For a single cylinder four stroke engine a comparison has been made between the predicted points of maximum volumetric efficiency using (i) Resonance equations (ii) the method of characteristics applied to the inlet tract.
It has been found that the resonance equations in this case predict accurately the position of the peak volumetric efficiency.
Applying these equations then enables a rapid assessment to be made of the probable effect on volumetric efficiency that changes in engine geometry would have.
