Influence of Vehicle Response Parameters on Driver Control Performance

The present study was aimed at delving into the effects of the vehicle response parameters on the performance of a driver-vehicle system.
In fact, a large number of studies of this sort have so far been carried out. Many researchers in various parts of the world have reported on the findings of their researchers into the effects of response parameters concerning yaw directional, lateral movements etc. on a driver-vehicle system. A test was reportedly applied to a vehicle with a steering system in which the phase had been brought forward further than that of the conventional vehicle. The test revealed that the performance of a driver-vehicle system could be improved when the phase of vehicle response had been advanced. Such a steering system has been recommended as one of promising improvements in a driver-vehicle system.
These research efforts have really resulted in identifying rather clearly how the vehicle response parameters are connected with the control performance of a driver-vehicle system as well as with the driver's subjective ratings. Yet we still seem to have a long way to go to expound systematically how each one of the response parameters affects a driver-vehicle system. This is partly due to the nonlinearity and inconsistency of the driver's control action. It is also arising from the functional relation between response parameters within the range permitted by the conventional vehicle construction. In other words, even though a vehicle is tested by singling out and changing a specific parameter, it will be impossible to determine which parameters are really affecting a driver-vehicle system because the other parameters are certain to change simultaneously in certain correlation with one another.
In order to come to grips with this problem, therefore, we planned to apply closed-loop tests to a test vehicle in which the response characteristics of yawing mode lateral moving mode could be changed somewhat independently from the range permitted by the conventional vehicle construction
