Abstract
If poorly planned, the development of our air transportation system will be impeded by unnecessary conflicts between airports and their neighbors. A thorough consideration of environmental factors is now required by three Federal statutes--the Airport and Airway Development Act of 1970, the Department of Transportation Act of 1966, and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Environment and Urban Systems, the focal point for environmental concerns in DOT, is giving particular attention to development of a more integrated and intermodal planning process, which is the key to the attainment of environmental objectives.
