Abstract
Beryllium, the new miracle material of the aerospace industry, has presented problems for nondestructive testing. Eddy current and penetrant encounter no particle difficulties, except those inherent in the tests themselves. But, radiography and ultrasonics have encountered problems because beryllium is nearly transparent to X-ray, and the velocity of sound in beryllium is extremely high. Low energy radiography and scintillation counting have eliminated the transparency problem; ultrasonic equipment capable of producing high frequency, short-pulse sound waves can cope with the high velocity of sound in beryllium. The new improved nondestructive techniques and equipment are all capable of meeting the standards of production.
