Abstract
The effect of various gasoline contaminants on carburetor operation is explained and results of accelerating pump and metering jet wear tests are given. A novel laboratory test method for determining a “flooding index” is presented. To insure proper carburetor operation gasoline should be free of gum, gels, and water. Flooding, rather than wear or blocking, is usually the factor which limits the maximum allowable fuel contamination entering the carburetor.
