Abstract
This paper presents a method of determining the dimensions of a bulkhead closure for a cylindrical tank under internal pressure, which results in minimum overall weight. The items considered are: the bulkhead, a portion of a cylindrical adapter of length equal to the bulkhead depth, and a portion of the tank cylindrical section. The length of this cylindrical section is such that its contained volume plus the bulkhead volume equals the volume of a hemisphere having a radius equal to that of the tank cylinder. Thus our weight comparisons are on the basis of constant volume.
