Abstract
This paper describes a design method of an advanced driver assistance system for avoiding rear-end collisions. First, the assistance system calculates the minimum safe headway distance based on the motion of two vehicles and the driving characteristics of the host vehicle. If the headway distance measured by external sensor is shorter than the minimum safety headway distance, the host vehicle is decelerated automatically with a restoring force from a virtual spring attached between two vehicles. Using a driving simulator, the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by experiments in rear-end collision scenario in which a forward vehicle decelerates suddenly.
