Diesel Combustion Improvement Using High Boost, Wide Range and High Rate EGR in a Single-Cylinder Engine (Third Report)~Effect of Multi-Injection on Exhaust Emissions and BSFC

In this study the reduction of the fuel consumption by multiple injections was investigated under the High Boost, Wide Range and High Rate EGR. The authors utilized pre and after injection to split the heat release for decreasing peak cylinder gas temperature as a strategy. The experiments were conducted in a single-cylinder engine for heavy-duty use and were operated at an important middle load condition. The flame movement and mixture formation in a combustion chamber was observed by means of a high-speed camera and a bore scope. This multiple injection method simultaneously reduces exhaust emissions and the fuel consumption.
