Abstract
Recently, the number of pedestrian fatalities in Japan is increasing. Since elderly people, who have fragile body against traffic accident, account for 69.2 percent in fatal injured pedestrians, the pedestrian protection hereafter needs to be considered from passive and active safety. Therefore, it has been practical that the pedestrian protection system warns driver of the risk for collision with pedestrian and assists in braking avoidance by detecting pedestrian with compound camera. However, the assist by steering avoidance is not considered well. Steering avoidance is effective in the situation where it is difficult to avoid the obstacle by braking avoidance because Time-To-Collision (TTC) at the limit of steering avoidance does not depend on relative velocity. Besides, the current pedestrian protection systems have a problem that initial cost is too expensive to popularize because most of those systems are using compound camera.
