For many years, the laser was used as a universal tool for high productive material processing. Since the 90s, laser welding is a common application in car body manufacturing. The latest developments in laser technology enabled totally new applications in different automotive application fields.
New laser sources arose and new systems were developed, which decreased the production cost dramatically. This paper shows an overview about the new sources, systems and their high productive applications, while costs are cut significantly. The mentioned applications include processes and system for remote welding, new ideas in the process chain of hot-formed body parts, as well as powertrain applications.
Beside the application examples, cost savings and increased productivity are discussed.
