Abstract
The high working temperatures of the internal combustion engine are the cause of its high efficiency. The function of radiator is to reject coolant heat to the out side air. Due to its higher specific heat water allows heat transfer at higher mean temperature differential compared to that of air. Hence a larger surface area of metal for air is provided by fins. This increases the radiator size as well as weight. Increasing the heat transfer rate and reducing the size of the radiator can be accomplished by a passive method of introducing eddy flow in the water passage.
