Investigations on the Realistic Modelling of the Flow Around Wheels and Wheel Arches by CFD

CFD simulations of the flow around wheels are often simplified by neglecting wheel rotation, tread pattern and tire deformation. In this paper we present detailed investigations on the effect of different simplification levels for modelling rotating wheels in CFD simulations with the commercial Lattice-Boltzmann Code PowerFLOW. In a first step, three model simplifications, which can affect the flow topology around the wheels, are defined. In a second step, these model simplifications are investigated in detail with respect to their influence on the resulting aerodynamic forces. The investigations are presented for an isolated wheel, and for a wheel within the wheel arch of a typical passenger car.
