Abstract
In response to a technology challenge issued by the Energy Saving Trust [1], a non-profit organisation funded by the UK government and the private sector, Zytek have developed an Ultra Low Carbon Car capable of producing less than the challenge target of 100 g/km CO2 based on a well to wheel analysis. This equates to a fuel economy of 3.36 l/100km or 84 mpg (imperial).
The vehicle has been developed around a unique transmission concept, combining simplicity, ease of manufacture, value for money and scalability to a wide variety of passenger car applications. The concept enables the vehicle to operate as a dual mode hybrid, including an extended all electric urban range via an optional plug-in mains electricity connection. The transmission is coupled to 2 high efficiency permanent magnet brushless electric motors, which together occupy no more space than a standard 6 speed manual transmission.
