Abstract
The objective of this research is to examine the theoretical applications of mechanized vermi-composting as it relates to an appropriate technology for integration into a CELSS (Closed-loop Ecological Life Support System).
The use of bio-humus from Eisenia fetida has been discussed in past CES (Controlled Ecological Systems) research and has proven to improve plant growth through an organic nutrient-rich substrate.
This paper compares nutrients derived from the vermi-composted Aqueous Bio-Formula (ABF) and the current nutrient ranges used in KSC (Kennedy Space Center) NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponics solutions.
Mechanized vermi-composting in terrestrial applications has been proven to decrease the space and time needed to decompose organic material, and produce beneficial plant growth properties in the resulting substrates. The question is, is this an appropriate technology transfer for CELSS?
