Development of Torsional Damper With Crowds of Steel Balls

In this paper, new torsional damper with crowds of steel balls is developed in order to remove the defects of known dampers and improve the damping performance. The damper is designed and manufactured, and experiments and analyses on the vibration reduction are carried out. As a result, it is clarified that the damper can effectively reduce the torsional vibration of crankshaft system for automobiles by adjusting the mass of balls of the experimental damper. And damping mechanism of the damper is estimated as follows: (1) Friction loss due to sliding on the contacting surfaces between damper mass and balls, and among crowds of balls. (2) Fluctuation of the natural frequency of crankshaft system in every period of the torsional vibration. (3) Hysteresis loss due to the elastic deformation of the contacting surfaces. Further, Modelling and Computer simulation on the torsional vibration of testing crankshaft system with the damper are carried out, and above-mentioned damping mechanisms are quantified as the basis for its optimum design.
