Abstract
Development of Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology to create white light has made the LED a potential light source for automotive forward lighting. The evaluation of the optical systems to provide high output performance is now the topic of investigation. This paper will propose an optical system to take advantage of LED technology enabling high output lamp performance. The lamp requirements are the critical first step to define. The evaluation of the optical design must be consistent with other lamps and show that the performance criteria are met. The results of the study will show an optical system that will provide high output performance for forward lighting applications. With the greatly increased output of LEDs, automotive forward lighting can meet photometric requirements in a design package that will build into the vehicle in a space efficient manner.
