Abstract
A rear projection full color multi-function displays (MFD) is a new entry in the displays arena and trying to find its place in the airplane cockpit. Rear projection is not a new concept with CRT type rear projection TVs in millions of homes. The introduction of microdisplay technology into rear projection has developed into a viable solution for the MFD. The use of microdisplays allows packaging constraints of CRT system to be overcome. It is clear rear projection has advantages over the leading flat panel Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD) but has a number of technology and cost hurtles to overcome.
