Abstract
To get a holistic view of the environmental impact of a fuel it is important to include the impact during production and not only during the use phase. The Volvo Environmental Database for Fuels contains data for emissions to air and energy use for the whole life cycle of some conventional and alternative fuels.
The aim of this study was not only to gather these data, but also to develop a tool to be able to easily compare fuels, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The tool is a program with a graphical user interface, which links to the fuel database. This makes it possible to vary the in-parameters, and the database will continuously be updated with new data. The aim of this paper is not to promote a certain fuel, but to present a method to compare different fuels from an environmental point of view.
