Abstract
The mechanism of promoted carbon oxidation in the presence of Pt catalysts and the effect of support materials for the Pt catalysts were studied. Addition of trace quantities of SO2 to the reactant gas containing NO and H2O substantially enhanced the oxidation rate. The promotional effect of SO2 was attributed to SO3 (or H2SO4), produced from SO2 over Pt, which may work as a catalyst that accelerates the oxidation of carbon by NO2. Pt catalysts supported on non-basic metal oxides such as Ta2O5, Nb2O5, WO3, SnO2 and SiO2 showed high activities for this reaction.
