A Guide for the Selection of Quick-Disconnect Couplings for Aerospace Fluid Systems

The factors involved in the selection of a quick-disconnect are grouped into the following classifications for the purpose of discussion: a Functional considerations. b Weight considerations. c Environmental performance factors. d End fitting types. e Additional considerations. A quick-disconnect coupling as used in this AIR is one that can be rapidly and repetitively connected and disconnected without excessive fluid loss. The relative importance of the design factors depends upon the fluid medium of the particular system in which quick-disconnect is to be used. The effect of the fluid media on each factor is discussed in this report where applicable.

This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the requirements for 24 degree cone AS5827 or EN 6123 flareless ring locked fitting assemblies per AS5550 and AS5865, for use in aircraft fluid systems at nominal operating pressure of 5080 psi (35000 kPa) maximum and operating temperature range of -65 to +275 °F (-54 to +135 °C). The general requirements shall be for, but not limited to, commercial aircraft hydraulic components per AS4941, using port configuration as specified in AS5551.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) establishes flexure test procedures to determine and classify the fatigue strengths of reconnectable or permanent hydraulic tube joints. The procedure is intended for conducting flexure tests of fittings and joints for hydraulic tubing materials such as AMS 5561 (21Cr-6Ni-9Mn) steel or AMS 4944 (3AL-2.5V) titanium. A mean stress is applied by holding system pressure in the specimens and flexing in a rotary or planar bending test machine.
