The air brake system is still the most common brake system in use in heavy diesel vehicles. For safety and economic reasons it is imperative to understand the performance and durability (especially fatigue and wear) of every component of a drum brake, particularly the brake shoes. In applications where torque is lower than 20kNm brake shoes are made of ductile metals such as SAE 1030 steel. For such ductile materials Brown-Miller and Fatemi-Socie are the most recommended methods for fatigue crack initiation life prediction. The next pages discuss the validation of these fatigue methods in the case study of a 325mm brake shoe.

This SAE Recommended Practice provides the test procedure and methods to calculate the effectiveness of brake blocks, using an inertia dynamometer. To minimize testing variability, and to optimize standardization and correlation, a single, high volume size of brake block is specified (FMSI No. 4515E) and evaluated in a reference S-cam brake assembly of 419 mm x 178 mm (16.5 in x 7.0 in) size, using a specified brake drum.

The response time of the air braking system is the main parameter affecting the longitudinal braking distance of vehicles. In this article, in order to predict and control the response time of the braking system of semitrailers, an AMESim model of the semitrailer braking system involving the relay emergency valve (REV) and chambers was established on the basis of analyzing systematically the working characteristics of the braking system in different braking stages: feedback braking, relay braking, and emergency braking. A semitrailer braking test bench including the brake test circuit and data acquisition system was built to verify the model with typical maneuver. For further evaluating the semitrailer braking response time, an experiment under different control pressures was carried out. Experimental results revealed the necessity of controlling the response time. As a result, a braking pressure compensation system was designed through adding intake and exhaust solenoid valves to the original braking system.
