INTERCHANGE is a DRIVE II project which aims to establish a pilot network for the exchange of traffic and travel information between European countries, based on commonly agreed specifications and standards. The first priority for the INTERCHANGE pilot network is to exchange traffic event information between participating national traffic information centers. Other types of information may be added later, when further countries are added to the system.Traffic and travel information services have already proved their value to citizens of many countries within Europe. Traffic information exchange is also regarded as essential for the efficient and the safe management of transport systems by the appropriate authorities. With continuing growth in travel between member states, due to increased business contacts, commerce, and social cohesion (associated in part with the completion of the Single European Market), the need for international travel information exchange continues to expand.Achievement of an efficient and cost-effective European Traveler Information Network requires internationally accepted standards for information definition, selection, coding and transmission.
