This document covers material most often used in ship systems and equipment but its use may be applied wherever nuts of the covered materials are used. This SAE Recommended Practice applies to valve assemblies that are used on passenger car and light truck braking systems utilizing motor vehicle hydraulic brake fluids. The procedure (SAE J1118) and these requirements (SAE J1137) were developed for brake fluids conforming to SAE J1703 and FMVSS 116 (DOT 3) requirements; however, it may be utilized for valves which use DOT 4 or DOT 5 brake fluid. These requirements are applicable to differential warning, metering hold off, bypass function, or proportioning type valves or any combination thereof.

Any test parameters, other than those specified in this SAE Recommended Practice, are to be agreed to by the tester and the requestor.

The test procedures describe a method to laboratory test suspension and steering system ball stud and/or socket assemblies for functional characteristics. This procedure is an extension of SAE J491b recommended practice on dimensional recommendations for ball studs towards a vehicle application. The tests are conducted either on ball studs individually or on complete integral assemblies representing the application.

This SAE Standard covers the general and dimensional data for industrial quality spherical rod ends commonly used on control linkages in automotive, marine, construction, and industrial equipment applications. The rod ends described are available from several manufacturers within the range of the interchangeable specifications. The sliding contact spherical self-aligning bearing members (ball and socket) are available in a variety of materials in types shown. The load capacities and wear capabilities vary considerably with the design and fabrication. It is suggested that the manufacturers be consulted for recommendations for the type and design appropriate to particular applications.

This document covers two types of hose fabricated from fabric braid and synthetic rubber, assembled with end fittings for use in automotive power steering applications as flexible connections within the temperature range of -40 °C to +120 °C (-40 °F to +250 °F) average, and 135 °C (275 °F) maximum peaks. These hoses are intended for use in applications where reduction in amplitude of pump pressure pulsations is required. Type 1 hose shall be suitable for 10.3 MPa (1500 psi) maximum working pressure. Type 2 hose shall be suitable for 10.3 MPa (1500 psi) maximum working pressure.

SAE J448, Surface Texture, has been set up for precision reference specimens using a controlled surface profile to obtain reproducible roughness values. These specimens are for instrument calibration. Appropriate symbols for roughness, waviness, and lay have also been standardized (ASA B46.1-1962 and SAE J448). For production control, especially from one geographical location to another, means are required to facilitate the inspection of surface characteristics called for by specifications which include not only roughness but profile waviness and lay. In order to integrate the requirements of the designer with the actual production of surfaces, a second grade of control standards must be adopted which will be functional in nature for the specific product being manufactured. These control standards may be Calibrated Pilot Specimens (actual parts with satisfactory texture) or Roughness Comparison Specimens (ASA B46.1-1962). This SAE Recommended Practice applies to speedometers, odometers, and speedometer drives typical of passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks used for personal or commercial purposes. The method of determining wheel revolutions per unit distance (3.1) and overall system design variation (3.3.3) are applicable to passenger cars only. Comparable recommendations for trucks and buses are under development. The data of tachometers is applicable to vehicular use, as previously described, and also to stationary and marine engines and special vehicles.

This SAE Recommended Practice describes a method to collect, identify, and quantify effluent resulting from deployment of in-vehicle stored energy restraint systems. Deployment and collection is completed in a 2.83 m3 (100 ft3 ) chamber. This procedure is written as a guideline for the identification and quantification of both particulate effluent (size, concentration, and composition) and gaseous effluent (concentration and composition). The intent of this procedure is to describe and recommend testing methods and not to establish limits for the effluent. This procedure should be used in conjunction with performance specifications from the customer and/or manufacturer of the device(s) being tested. This is a general procedure for repetitive and comparative testing, and suggests only general guidelines for the safe conduct of tests and reliable data correlation.

An airbag generates a considerable amount of kinetic energy during its inflation process. As a result substantial forces can be developed between the deploying airbag and the out-of-position occupant. Accident data and laboratory test results have indicated a potential for head, neck, chest, abdominal, and leg injuries from these forces. This suggests that mitigating such forces should be considered in the design of airbag restraint systems. This document outlines a comprehensive set of test guidelines that can be used for investigating the interactions that occur between the deploying airbag and the occupant who is near the module at the time of deployment. Static and dynamic tests to investigate driver and passenger systems are given. Static tests may be used to sort designs on a comparative basis. Human Biomechanics and Simulations Standards Committee
This report investigates the use of single and multi-layer coatings on replaceable headlamp bulbs and how such coatings can affect the performance of bulbs in terms of light scattering, which can contribute to glare, and spectral separation in headlamps. Tests were developed to investigate the effects of absorptive and interference (multi-layer) coatings on bulbs, and on bulbs in headlamp systems. These tests provide validation for a proposed bulb color separation test, which establishes limits for spectral separation within the boundaries of SAE J578 white color requirements. The bulb color separation test provides a definitive selection criterion to identify bulbs that cause excessive light scatter (glare) and/or spectral separation in an optical system.

This SAE Recommended Practice describes a method to be used for the static deployment of airbag module assemblies. The results obtained from the deployment tests will be used to verify compliance with design requirements and/or specifications, and for other engineering purposes such as module performance comparisons, and/or CAE input or validation. The purpose for this procedure is to describe recommended test methods to ensure, to the extent possible, reliable and reproducible test results for driver airbag modules, passenger airbag modules, or other airbag modules (e.g., side airbags, roof rail airbags, knee bolster airbags, etc.). Performance limits or acceptance criteria are not established as they are typically defined based on specific vehicle design requirements and/or manufacturer specifications. It is intended to be a general procedure for repetitive testing and suggests only general guidelines for the safe conduct of tests and reliable data correlation.

The material defined by this SAE document is an impact modified, heat stabilized, 66 nylon reinforced with glass fibers. This material is for use in dust shields for hydraulic disc brakes. NOTE—The applicability of a plastic dust shield must be evaluated for each individual brake system. Its use with solid rotors and/or high performance brake systems is not recommended.

This SAE Recommended Practice applies to construction, general purpose industrial, forestry, and specialized mining machinery as categorized in SAE J1116. It describes the machine components and systems that should be disconnected, secured, or otherwise rendered inoperative. Deterrent systems or devices covered by this recommended practice are to be used when the machine is shut down per the manufacturer's shut down instructions. It is not the intent of this recommended practice to protect the machine or the authorized machine operator, or to protect against abuse, destructive vandalism, or theft.
OPTC1, Personnel Protection (General)
This standard applies to hydraulically operated backhoes (as defined in SAE J1116) This standard describes a uniform "over end" and "full swing arc" lifting capacity rating for backhoes. It is based on the actual capacity of the machine to lift and support a load under stable conditions. Rated lift capacities will be specified for both the boom and the dipperstick and will be shown on a lift capacity chart Figure 1.
MTC1, Earthmoving Machinery
This SAE Recommended Practice defines minimum requirements for general characteristics, performance, and durability. It is applicable to remanufactured assemblies (factory rebuild) only. This document applies to master cylinder assemblies and components of current established designs but does not cover fluid level sensors, integral proportioning valves, or those master cylinders used in anti-lock brake or traction control systems. These will be covered by other standards. The general characteristics and test procedure are specified in SAE J1693.

This should be kept in mind when considering its use. The SAE No 2 Friction Test Machine is used to evaluate the friction characteristics of automatic transmission plate clutches with automotive transmission fluids. It can also be used to conduct durability tests on wet friction systems. The specific purpose of this document is to define a Durability Test based on a specific power level selected from either the 3600 r/min Stepped Power Test or from the 6000 r/min Stepped Power Test, for the evaluation of wet friction system performance variation as a function of number of cycles. This standard procedure is intended for common use by both suppliers and end users to allow objective comparisons of wet friction material system performance. Automatic Transmission and Transaxle Committee
This standard covers requirements for several types and grades of electrodeposited nickel/chromium coatings on ferrous or copper alloy basis metals and copper/nickel/chromium on zinc or aluminum alloys for the finishing and corrosion protection of decorative ornamentation and hardware of motor vehicles and marine controls and fittings. Four grades of coatings are provided to correlate with the service conditions under which each is expected to provide satisfactory performance, namely: very severe, severe, moderate, and mild. Definitions and typical examples of these service conditions are provided in Appendix A.1 Information contained in this document generally conforms to the information contained in ASTM B 456, Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Nickel plus Chromium.
