Guidance for Assessing the Damage Detection Capability of Structural Health Monitoring Systems

This document contains information and guidance necessary for the development of a representative, repeatable validation program that may be utilized to assess the capability of SHM systems. The nature of SHM data differs from that seen in traditional nondestructive evaluation (NDE) applications in that the position of SHM sensors is fixed and SHM data can be available much more frequently (if not continuously) over time. This document presents methodologies that can be used to arrive at SHM capability while considering the unique nature of SHM deployment. Each SHM system must be considered independently to determine the applicability and limitations of the guidance contained here for each SHM system being assessed.

The main document also includes environmental guidelines for active devices to be used in avionics applications. These are included as guidance for commercial aircraft use and are included with the caveat that the requirements of any particular aircraft platform or customer would supersede these generic guidelines.

This specification provides Ethernet physical parameters and data link layer specifications for use in a commercial aircraft environment. This specification provides general and specific guidelines for the use of IEEE 802.3 compliant Ethernet, 2000 edition. Physical layer and Medium Access Control (MAC) sub-layers are expected to comply with the Open System Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model to enable maximal utilization of off-the-shelf components, both hardware and software, for aviation use. The Ethernet Physical layer specification defines the electrical and optical parameters for the 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 100BASE-FX Ethernet implementations. This specification references ARINC Specification 600: Air Transport Avionics Equipment Interfaces for definition of copper-based implementations of the Ethernet Physical layer.

ARINC Specification 620 defines the aircraft interfaces to the ACARS ground system operated by a Datalink Service Provider (DSP). It also defines the interface between the DSP and other ground-based datalink services. The datalink ground system standard definition supports traditional ACARS protocols as well as Media Independent Aircraft Messaging (MIAM) as defined by ARINC Specification 841. MIAM messages can be much larger than ACARS messages (5 MB versus 3.3 kB per message). Supplement 9 includes methods to optimize the routing of MIAM messages. It adds ACARS Labels and Identifiers in support of Onboard Network System (ONS), Runway State Assessment, Aircraft Tracking for AOC Position Reporting, ATS Wind Services and Fight-deck based Interval Management System (FIMS) applications. It provides Media Advisory Codes for Broadband Systems (i.e., AeroMACS, Inmarsat SwiftBroadband (SBB) Satcom, and Iridium NEXT/Certus Satcom).

ARINC 814 defines an XML encoding and compression standard for aviation. It is based on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Binary XML document. Binary XML encoding is extended in a way that is both flexible and robust. Compression is added on top of the binary encoding. ARINC 814 is expected to be used with Aeronautical Databases, in particular, ARINC Specification 813: Embedded Interchange Format for Terrain Databases, ARINC Specification 815: Embedded Interchange Format for Obstacle Databases, and ARINC Specification 816: Embedded Interchange Format for Airport Mapping Database.
