This procedure provides a method of determining a benchmark SgRP position for adjustable Driver’s seats in Class A vehicles where the design intent information is not available. Class A vehicles include passenger cars, multipurpose passengervehicles, and vans with Seat Heights (H30) greater than 127 mm and less than 405 mm for the purposes of this document. Once the Driver’s Seat Benchmark SgRP is determined other seating positions can be readily benchmarked based on the standard procedures. This document references installation procedures using the SAE J826 H-point Machine. If desired the document can be adapted to use the HPM-II by substituting the appropriate SAE J4002 instatllation procedures. In that case, the use of the HPM-II should be clearly documented. Since the SgRP is the basis for many interior benchmark dimensions this information can be used to assess or compare vehicle interiors in a standard repeatable way based on the packaging limitations of the property.

This SAE Standard describes head position contours and procedures for locating the contours in a vehicle. Head position contours are useful in establishing accommodation requirements for head space and are required for several measures defined in SAE J1100. Separate contours are defined depending on occupant seat location and the desired percentage (95 and 99) of occupant accommodation. This document is primarily focused on application to Class A vehicles (see SAE J1100), which include most personal-use vehicles (passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, pick-up trucks). A procedure for use in Class B vehicles can be found in Appendix B.

This document describes the 2-D computer-aided design (CAD) template for the HPM-1 H-point machine or HPD available from SAE. The elements of the HPD include the curve shapes, datum points and lines, and calibration references. The intended purpose for this information is to provide a master CAD reference for design and benchmarking. The content and format of the data files that are available are also described. The actual CAD model files are included with this product and are provided in the following formats: CATIA v5 (without parametrics), IGES, and STEP.

The devices of this SAE Standard provide the means by which passenger compartment dimensions can be obtained using a deflected seat rather than a free seat contour as a reference for defining seating space. All definitions and dimensions used in conjunction with this document are described in SAE J1100. These devices are intended only to apply to the driver side or center occupant seating spaces and are not to be construed as instruments which measure or indicate occupant capabilities or comfort. This document covers only one H-point machine installed on a seat during each test. Certified H-point templates and machines can be purchased from: SAE International 400 Commonwealth Drive Warrendale, PA 15096-0001 Specific procedures are included in Appendix A for seat measurements in short- and long-coupled vehicles and in Appendix B for measurement of the driver seat cushion angle. Specifications and a calibration inspection procedure for the H-point machine are given in Appendix C. Additional considerations are necessary when a Head Restraint Measuring Device (HRMD) is mounted to an H-point machine (Appendix D).
