This SAE Recommended Practice describes a test method for determination of heavy truck (Class VI, VII, and VIII) tire force and moment properties under combined cornering and braking conditions. The properties are acquired as functions of slip angle, normal force, and slip ratio. Slip angle and normal force are changed incrementally using a sequence specified in this document. At each increment, the slip ratio is continually changed by application of a braking torque ramp. The data are suitable for use in vehicle dynamics modeling, comparative evaluations for research and development purposes, and manufacturing quality control. This document is intended to be a general guideline for testing on an ideal machine, and modifications to the protocols recommended within are expected depending on the requirements of each customer. Due care is necessary when modifying protocols to ensure that the integrity of the data is maintained.

This SAE Recommended Practice describes a test method for determination of heavy truck (Class VI, VII, and VIII) tire force and moment properties under free-rolling cornering conditions. The steady-state properties are acquired as functions of slip angle and normal force, which are changed incrementally using a sequence specified in this document. The data are suitable for use in vehicle dynamics modeling, comparative evaluations for research and development purposes, and manufacturing quality control. This document addresses two principal topics; a) the description of a hypothetical “Ideal Machine,” and b) a standard directly applicable to testing practices currently common to the industry. The references to the “Ideal Machine” are meant to provide a roadmap for the testing machine manufacturer, providing direction and goals for the next generation of testing capabilities. The ranges of parameters for the “Ideal Machine,” including those in Tables 2 and 3, are intended to represent minimal requirements to meet the full and complete data needs of the industry. This SAE Standard applies to all combinations of pneumatic tires, wheels, or runflat devices for military tactical wheeled vehicles only as defined in SAE J2013. This applies to original equipment and new replacement tires, retread tires, wheels or runflat devices. This document describes tests and test methodology, which will be used to evaluate and measure tire/wheel/runflat system and changes in vehicle performance. All of the tests included in this document are not required for each tire/wheel/runflat assembly. The Government Tire Engineering Office and Program Office for the vehicle system have the responsibility for the selection of a specific test(s) to be used. The selected test(s) should be limited to that required to evaluate the tire/wheel/runflat system and changes in vehicle performance. Selected requirements of this specification shall be used as the basis for procurement of a tire, wheel and/or runflat device for military tactical wheeled vehicles.

This SAE recommended practice defines the system and component functions, measurement metrics, testing methodologies for evaluating the functionality and performance of ground vehicle CTIS. Systems of this type allow the driver to select the operational tire pressure set point (TPSP) based on off-highway conditions, and, upon returning to highway operations, maintain the inflation pressure to the vehicle specified level. These systems are recommended to address all serviceable tires as originally installed on a vehicle by the OEM and/or specialty vehicle manufacturer, and, for the aftermarket (including replacement or spare parts) are recommended (but optional) to address all tire/rim combinations installed after initial vehicle sale or in-use dates. Systems for use by military and some other very rigorous off-road applications require such extreme performance requirements, particularly at very high and low temperature and other combat-based extremes that such applications may fall outside the recommended parameters of the subject document.
