Tension Indicating Washer Tightening Method for Fasteners

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J2486_201804
  • Current
Published 2018-04-24 by SAE International in United States
This SAE Recommended Practice covers installation and inspection methods for fasteners which are tensioned using Tension Indicating Washers (TIWs) as a means to ensure that adequate tension is developed in mechanically fastened joints. Figure 1 depicts a typical TIW, and Figure 2 depicts a fastener assembly with a TIW before and after tensioning.

Torque-Tension Tightening for Metric Series Fasteners

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J1701M_201711
  • Current
Published 2017-11-08 by SAE International in United States
This SAE Information Report is provided as an advisory guide. Individual application discretion is recommended. The content has been presented as accurately as possible, but responsibility for its application lies with the user. The document covers a number of the variables in the torque-tension relationship: friction, materials, temperature, humidity, fastener and mating part finishes, surfaces, and the kind of tightening tools or equipment used. Also described in this document is the torque management required to achieve satisfactory fastened joint tightening. This guide is limited in application to clearance fit threads, such as the common 6g/6H class of fit. Other thread types including interference fit, mechanical locking, prevailing torque, or forms other than ISO-Metric may apply to some aspects of this standard but are not specifically covered. The procedures described in this document are based on general principles for the determination of the torque-tension relationship for the use of end users. This is a guide and is not intended to be made a procurement requirement. For critical joint design the assembly torque values should be determined…

Mechanical and Material Requirements for Steel Nuts

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J995_201707
  • Current
Published 2017-07-20 by SAE International in United States
This SAE Standard covers the mechanical and material requirements for three grades of steel nuts suitable for use in automotive and related engineering applications, in sizes 1/4 to 1-1/2 inches, inclusive, and with dimensions conforming with the requirements of the latest issue of SAE J482 or ASME B18.2.2, except for machine screw nuts which are not covered in this standard. This document does not include limits for surface discontinuities. Where usage requires such control, limits may be specified separately. For sizes 1/4 through 1 inch, this may be done by the statement: “Surface discontinuities shall not exceed the limits specified in ASTM F812/F812M.”

Torque-Tension Tightening for Inch Series Fasteners

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J1701_201702
  • Current
Published 2017-02-09 by SAE International in United States
This SAE Information Report is provided as an advisory guide. Individual application discretion is recommended. The content has been presented as accurately as possible, but responsibility for its application lies with the user. The document covers the variables in the torque-tension relationship: friction, materials, temperature, humidity, fastener and mating part finishes, surfaces, and the kind of wrenching employed. Also, described in this document is the torque management required to achieve correct fastener joint tightening. The thread fit of fasteners must be in accordance with Class 2A for external and Class 2B for internal inch threads.

Blind Rivets - Break Mandrel Type

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J1200_201701
  • Current
Published 2017-01-04 by SAE International in United States
This SAE Standard establishes the dimensional, mechanical, and performance requirements of inch and metric break mandrel blind rivets suitable for use in joining the component parts of an assembly.

Surface Discontinuities on Nuts

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J122_201701
  • Current
Published 2017-01-04 by SAE International in United States
This SAE Recommended Practice defines, illustrates, and specifies allowable limits for the various types of surface discontinuities that may occur during the manufacture and processing of metric-series nuts, in sizes 6.3 to 25 mm and inch-series nuts in sizes 1/4 to 1 in, inclusive, which are primarily intended for use in automotive assemblies.

Torque-Tension Test Procedure for Steel Threaded Fasteners - Metric Series

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J174M_201701
  • Current
Published 2017-01-03 by SAE International in United States
This test procedure is intended to provide a quality control method for checking torque-tension characteristics of non-prevailing torque type threaded steel fasteners 6 through 24 mm nominal diameters. Realistically, torque-tension relationships for specific individual fastener assembly joints will vary due to the different joint parameters. Tests using actual joint components will be required to determine accurate torque-tension values for those conditions. For the inch series version, see SAE J174.

Spring Nuts

Fasteners Committee
  • Ground Vehicle Standard
  • J891_201611
  • Current
Published 2016-11-28 by SAE International in United States
Included herein are complete general and dimensional specifications for metric and inch types of spring nuts recognized as SAE standard. These nuts are intended for general use where the engagement of a single thread on the mating screw is considered adequate for the application. It should be noted that spring nuts having other configurations, dimensions, provisions for ground, etc., are available and manufacturers should be consulted.
