Tilt Wing Propelloplane Design Requirements

Tilt wing propelloplanes are broadly described, The selections of propeller disk loadings and some of the significant differences between rotor and propeller lifted high performance aircraft are briefly discussed. Possible propelloplane control systems and their relative advantages are mentioned, Brief consideration is given to longitudinal balance and other practical design problems. Primary emphasis is given to a study of the unusual aerodynamic characteristics of tiltwing propelloplanes in the hovering and the accelerating and decelerating transition regimes of flight The decelerating transition from airplane type flight to hovering flight is shown to be the critical maneuver for propelloplanes.
