Sikorsky Aircraft conducted an Advanced Transmission Component Development Program under the sponsorship of the Applied Technology Laboratory, U.S. Army Research and Technology Laboratories (AVRADCOM), Fort Eustis, Virginia that consisted of four major efforts: design, fabri. cation and testing of a stainless steel fabricated housing which was interchangeable with the BLACK HAWK helicopter magnesium main transmission housing; development of an advanced thrust-carrying cylindrical roller bearing that was compatible with the BLACK HAWK input bevel pinion shaft ball and roller bearing set; evaluation of a high-contact-ratio buttress gear tooth form planetary, manufactured from CBS-600 high-temperature steel; and conduct of a systems integration test. The basic overall purpose of this program was to conduct development testing on selected key components that would lead to their use in advanced, high temperature operating helicopter transmissions in this decade. This capability will either eliminate the gearbox oil cooler or permit the use of a reduced-size cooler and will provide payoffs in system weight, cost, and a decrease in vulnerable area. The referenced papers describe in detail the basic program and reported test results available at the time they were presented. Results from these efforts, previously reported, are summarized here for review and to provide background for the discussion of the systems integration test which was not reported on earlier.
